Review: Grime is an English style of rap that often has instrumental influences ranging from House to Hip hop sounds. The Grime genre was solidified by artists such as Plan B. A very prominent crew in the grime scene was the Meridian Crew, but after they left Jamie Adenuga better known as JME founded BBK. Today I'll be reviewing JME's second studio album, Blam.
'Darker' sounds like a song that would fit better on an ICP album. The whole call and response thing just doesn't work for me. Darker doesn't really help the songs case in any way. And it's production just sounds silly. 'Famalam' has some really nice video game sounds and weird sounds popping up everywhere but unlike 'Darker' it actually fits the song well. Jme's lyrics on this song are about him being a good rapper. 'Over Me' is a popular song from JME's discography but I personally wasn't ever a huge fan of the song. It's EDM sounding synths just don't fit with JME well for me. 'Jme' is where this album starts to pick up and get better. He has some clever rhymes in this song and is overall just funny in this song. The chorus of this song brings across his message very well, "You will never be like 'JME'". The song tells us JME's life story and describes him as a rapper very well.
'CD Is Dead' has a catchy techno sounding instrumental. I've always found Tempa T annoying because of his amount of aggression he always shows but on this track the aggression fits the track well. The song is telling bad rappers to get a day job and stop rapping. 'Hospital' is a hard hitting that's about music being the only cure for sickness. The song heavily samples 'The Prodigy's 'Take Me To The Hospital' and makes it fit the song well. 'Pick Up The Mic' has some funny lines and has simple, classic JME production. 'It's Not A Long Ting' has some pretty dumb lines, "It used to be a ching chang chong ting" however the song overall has some nice production and funny lyrics.
'Money On My Brain' is a song about JME's money. The song is a clear parody of other rappers. Normally that would annoy me but it also has some good lines. (And some bad lines of course). The production for the song uses some more video game sounds and it sounds really good on this track. The title track 'Blam!' is hilarious. He talks about what he would do to someone if they were saying things about him to other people. The song has some simple production. 'I Love Music' is a clever song about how much music changed his life. It has some clever and funny lines and a brilliant instrumental because of the use of the choir sounds and the beautiful synths in the background.
'Oh' is a song about the ups and downs of his relationship with a girl. He talks about how sometimes they fight but then they just make up and go on a trip. It's production has some nice sample work and a good meaning. 'Sidetracked', one of the best songs on the album, is about how JME's lost his life and can't seem to get it back. This song shows how everyone has a tough life, no matter how rich or famous you are. It has some lyrics about how when he was feeling down he had no one to talk to. The song has some nice catchy production with the guitar sounds and has fellow BBK rapper 'Wiley'. 'I'm The Best' is about how JME's the best rapper in his area. It has some funny lines with references to 'Super Mario' and some catchy production that has some 'Rave Music' synths over a grime beat. 'Music Ting' is an amazing song about how nobody wanted JME in the music industry and nobody wanted to see him succeed but he did anyway. The song has insightful lyrics and catchy production with the nice, ambient choir sounds in the background and catchy synths. The last track, 'Mario's Flag' is an instrumental with 'Super Mario' samples throughout. The song's catchy but repetitive.
Overall this song is a fun and intresting listen and I recommend you listen to it. It should be somewhere on Youtube or Spotify https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0B08F6E4FF22E82F.
